2015 was a great year for film productions and acting performances. Here is a list of some of the best and worst movies from the past year.
BEST: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
This long awaited installment managed to delight both die hard fans and people new to the Star Wars Universe. Small moments of humor are mixed in with fascinating action sequences and complex character portrayals, while old favorites make fascinating reappearances.
WORST: Terminator Genisys
This sequel is blatantly just an attempt at cashing in on the success of the previous films. The movie is so full of illogical events, inconsistencies, and clumsy plot elements that even dedicated fans hate it.
BEST Mad Max: Fury Road
This return to the post apocalyptic world of Max Max met with praise from both critics and audiences. The enthralling action sequences, gorgeous cinematography, and thought-provoking plot were enough to easily put it into the top movies of the year, and both Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron did a wonderful job portraying their characters.
WORST: Fifty Shades of Grey
No list of the worst movies in 2015 would be complete without the movie adaption of the critically-panned book. The wooden acting, serial killer-esque overtones, and implausible plot all combine to make it an unpleasant viewing experience. Without the X-rated scenes that made the book so popular, the movie is utterly pointless.
BEST: Selma
This movie takes a critical look at the life and death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. David Oyelowo gives a mesmerizing performance, and the movie provides an insightful glimpse of some of the most important parts of the fight for civil rights.
WORST: Hot Tub Time Machine
Sadly, this movie continues the trend of sequels being horrible. The plot is so bad and the humor is so juvenile that the star from the first one, John Cusack, declined to be in it. He definitely made the right choice.
Adam McKay is best known for goofy comedies, but The Big Short manages to combine his comedic flare with a serious subject to create a movie that takes a fascinating look at the economic downturn of 2008. The star-packed cast (including Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, and Steve Carell) repeatedly break the fourth wall to explain complex banking terms humorously while simultaneously deliver tense, emotion-filled performances.
